Mel Gibson in The Patriot

Mel Gibson, Patriot, 4th of July, Revolution, War

A war veteran who has renounced violence reluctantly takes up arms when the British bring the American Revolutionary War to his doorstep.

It is South Carolina, and the spirit of 1776 fills the air throughout the thirteen American colonies. Rebellion is brewing, taxation from the British crown is taking a toll on the American colonists, and a conflict with England is inevitable. Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a veteran of the French and Indian War, has renounced fighting forever to raise his family in peace. However, as his sons Gabriel (Heath Ledger) and Thomas (Gregory Smith) become young men, they get swept up in the American Revolutionary War movement to oust the Redcoats by force. But the brutal British Colonel William Tavington (Jason Isaacs) captures Gabriel and sentences him to hang. As Gabriel is being taken away, Thomas is shot by Tavington as he tries to free him, leaving Benjamin no choice but take up arms in the militia and the fight to give the young American nation its freedom.

Product Description

Product Description

A reluctant South Carolina farmer (Mel Gibson) is forced to fight the British in this adventure epic set during the time of the American Revolution. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards® (2000) – including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound – The Patriot is a gripping tale of war and family, now fully remastered in 4K.

Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, Independence Day, and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvelous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 1770s (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat’s screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that elevated his earlier script for Saving Private Ryan
